Dihydroxy-2-Propanone-Dihyxal (DHA):
a simple carbohydrate derived from sugar-beets, this water-soluble extract effectively darkens skin colour within a couple of hours. By reacting with the amino acids located in the stratum corneum (top, dead layer of skin), the resulting pigments produced are called melanoidins which are similar to melanins. Melanins are located in the deeper layers of the skin, and are not affected by DHA as it does not penetrate any further than the stratum corneum. This temporary change can last from 7 to 10 days.
